What is a visa?+
Is an official authorization appended to a passport, permitting entry into and travel within a particular country or region.
What is a work permit?+
A work permit is a generic term for a legal authorization, which allows a person to take employment. It is most often used in reference to instances where a person is given permission to work in a country where one does not hold citizenship.
What is a temporary resident visa?+
A United States temporary resident visa is an official document issued by a visa officer. The temporary resident visa is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for admission to a foreign country (United States) as a visitor, student or temporary worker. It does not guarantee your admission to those countries. When you arrive at the point of entry to a foreign country, an officer from the Border Service Agency will decide if you will be admitted. A change of circumstances between the time of your application for a temporary resident visa and your arrival, or additional information available, could still result in you being refused entry.
How many types of visas are there for the United States?+
Single entry visa — allows you to enter a foreign country just once. It can also be used for repeat entries from the United States or Saint-Pierre and Miquelon during the time validated for your stay, as long as you do not enter another country. A single-entry visa is normally valid for six months. Multiple entry visa — allows you to enter those countries as many times as you wish during the validated period of your stay. Transit visa — required when you will be in the United States for 48 hours or less on your way to another country.
How do I apply for a temporary resident visa for the United States?+

Is my current immigration status relevant for United States immigration purposes?+

As a general rule, you must submit your United States Immigration Visa Application to the Immigration Visa Office responsible for the country of your citizenship, or to the visa office responsible for the country you are currently residing in if you have been legally admitted to that country for at least one year.
